A scheme to give an opportunity to young and bright engineering graduates to join as Half Time Teaching Assistants (HTTA), was introduced in NITK under funding from Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme-Phase II (TEQIP-II), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. Of India, with the approval of Board of Governors in its resolution No.22, dated 05-11-2011. This is a three year program based on the ‘Teach While You Learn’ concept. The scheme was commenced in July 2012 and will end in the month of June 2015. The candidates will obtain a regular full time M. Tech. Degree conforming to the existing NITK academic regulations with three years duration. The course work is normally completed at the end of first three semesters and the remaining three semesters is earmarked for the completion of thesis work as the candidates selected are also expected to assist departments concerned in carrying out R&D activities, consultancy work, laboratory development including preparation of instruction manuals, conducting tutorials, laboratory classes and internal assessments.

It is worth mentioning here that the Half Time Teaching Assistants were selected through a rigorous selection procedure considering their Academic performance, GATE Score, Performance in the Aptitude Test, Department level interview and Institutional level interview.

Considering the quality of the candidates and their research potential,  all such Half Time Teaching Assistants are paid an enhanced assistantship of Rs. 15,000/- per month when the regular M. Tech students are paid only Rs. 8,000/-  per month as stipend.
